The Sociology Department of the Department of Social Sciences was established in 2002 and then became a Department of the school of humanities, as part of the expansion and independence of the Academy's schools and departments.

Outstanding scientific contribution to community development programs, serving its causes, and promoting its orientations. 

The mission of the department is to prepare qualified and competent researchers to contribute to the development of higher education and solve the problems of society, able to deal with the social and economic changes that Libyan society is going through in particular and the world in general, and foresee the future.

1. Prepare specialists in the fields of sociology, capable of teaching at higher universities and institutes competently.
2. Preparing researchers in the social fields who are able to conduct in-depth and innovative scientific research that contributes to the progress of scientific research.
3. Preparing scientific competencies capable of effectively contributing to the planning and implementation of programs related to social problems (such as delinquency, crime, unemployment), social development and planning, and addressing social diseases.
4. Providing scientific consultations to social institutions in society by the professor of the Department.
5. Strengthening scientific relations with the corresponding departments inside and outside Libya, and actively participating in scientific conferences at home and abroad to serve our national and national interests, and contribute to keeping our society abreast of the developments of the Times.
